This course is on the study of American history from the first permanent English settlements of the early seventeenth century to the American Civil War. We will examine the process during which United States became a sprawling national republic. What brought Americans together? What tore them apart? Why are there conflicts in racial, religious, and sectional areas? We will discuss these topics in this course.
