This course is an introduction to the aesthetics of film that examine the elements making up a film: narratives, sound and image, mise en scene, cinematography, and editing. Topics covered also include genres, race, gender, authorship, ideology, and representation. We will discuss how these elements interact with one another to constitute a whole system that generates meanings and other effects. By completing the course, students are expected to gain general familiarity with the major aesthetic aspects of film and develop critical judgments and analyses about their film experiences.
