Description

This course is a chronological survey on American history from the first permanent English settlements of the early seventeenth century to 1877. We will examine the process during which United States became a sprawling national republic. What brought Americans together? What tore them apart? Why are there conflicts in racial, religious, and sectional areas? Major topics discussed in the course include: colonization, slavery, the American Revolution, Native Americans, the Civil War and Reconstruction.
